Wishing you a prosperous new year 2016

Faith Like This

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, "I tell you the truth, I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel!"
Matthew 8:10

What an honor it is to impress Jesus with your faith. But faith means believing in Jesus beyond human reason. Are you keeping your faith separate from your struggles in life? Invite Him in. Rituals and obligation do not amaze Jesus. Instead, it's trusting Jesus with your problems, asking for His help, and believing He will provide.

Gently & Humbly

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.
Galatians 6:1

Each one of us has a God given mission on this earth. Sometimes we stumble and are deterred from this mission because we allow sin to get in the way. Fortunately, we are not alone, God has blessed us with other believers to help us along the way. It is very important we humbly help others when they fall off track. Just think how proud God will be for helping others get back to their mission.

Let The Holy Spirit Guide Your Life

So I Say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.
Galatians 5:16

Are you open to listening to what the Holy Spirit has to say? It's difficult to know when it is the Holy Spirit leading you, but there are several discernible ways. First, you are open to guidance. Second, you are ready to obey what the Holy Spirit guides you to do even if it is outside of your comfort zone. Third, you know the difference between your feelings and the promptings of the Holy Spirit. So, let the Holy Spirit guide your life.

Sharing Your Success

The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of Heaven's Armies.
Haggai 2:8

Life is busy. We're so focused on achieving more, advancing our careers, and moving on to the next stage in life. While it's a good thing to improve, we need to remind ourselves that the purpose is for God's kingdom and not ours. As such, take a moment to reflect on this and think of how you can be a light to someone today from the successes that He's given to you.

What if...?

But Moses protested again, "What if they won't believe me or listen to me? What if they say, 'The Lord never appeared to you'?"
Exodus 4:1

Have you ever had an important event come up that you stressed out about? You wrestled and tried to plan every possible mishap or control every outcome to avoid mistakes. You are not alone, Moses did the same thing. Have faith, God does not ask us to do things we cannot handle. He will go before us and make way for courage, confidence, and peace if you trust Him.

Isaiah 55:12

Do other people find your joy contagious? Everyone gravitates towards a happy person who is filled with joy and laughter. But we who believe in Christ have much to be happy about. When God answers a prayer, celebrate with such joy that no one can resist from joining you. Dance, clap, sing, and shout to show all the world you have much to be joyful about. What blessings are you joyful about today?

Filled with Grief

I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief.
Psalm 38:6

David was filled with grief and so too are we vulnerable to depression. It's a difficult mindset to escape once you allow those inward thoughts to take hold. Take heart and realize this...God has a plan for your happiness. Your happiness will be sustained not by circumstances, but by His enduring love for you. Once you realize the depth of His love, your inwardly thoughts will turn outwardly towards loving others.

Be Renewed

Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Colossians 3:10

We are forgiven of our sins and because of this we are free from our old ways. We no longer need to be chained to guilt or behave immorally. Instead, allow yourself to be renewed and refreshed. Learn the heart of God by reading the Bible today and putting into action the teachings of Christ. It is with Him you will find freedom.

Proverbs 4:23

Do your feelings get hurt easily? Perhaps it's time you start guarding your heart. It is not fun walking around sulking and carrying grudges because you have been hurt. Why does this happen? Because you need to draw your strength from your heavenly Father. Pray to Him daily and ask Him to help you get rid of your sensitivity. It will require you to be willing to let go of your hurts.

He is Good

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.
Psalm 107:1

We witness God's love for as we get together with our loved ones. Relationships may be difficult at times but God has brought us together for a reason. If love of family filled the air, let's be thankful to our heavenly father. If it's been a challenging day dealing with siblings, parents, cousins or in-laws, lean on God even harder and trust that there is a greater purpose for the events that have taken place.

To Give Light

Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.
Luke 1:78-79

Jesus' birth is surrounded by symbols of the light he brought into this world full of darkness. Like the shining star that appeared to the wise men, Jesus has brought light into our lives. He guides us to peace and his death on the cross for our sins is evidence of God's love for us. Let's celebrate in remembrance of the light Jesus has brought to your life.

Side Effects of Talent

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you.
Romans 12:6

Everyone has some awesome gifts that God has given to us. But like side-effects to medicine, gifts have associated habits or behaviors that may be distracting. You may have a talent to multi-task and juggle many things but that may come at a price of not being able to devote your complete attention on one person. Maybe your gift is carefully crafting your words when you speak to be respectful of other's feelings. However, others may see you as being quiet or disinterested because of that. Keep this in mind the next time someone's behavior bothers you. Be patient and understanding of those behaviors while honoring God for creating the awesome gifts they showcase.

The Mighty Power

When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
Exodus 14:31

Time and time again, God performed many miracles for the Israelites in order to free them from Egypt. Yet again and again, their hearts were skeptical and failed to put their trust in Him. Is our faith so weak that we expect a miracle first before we place our faith in the Lord? Surely we can recognize the face of our Heavenly Father when He works in our lives without expecting an act of God to occur.

Merry Christmas

Very Plain

And my message and my preaching were very plain.  Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:4

We all can get carried away with ourselves when we want to impress others. One way we do this is by using elegant words and highly strategic thoughts. However, when speaking of faith to others it is much more important for other people to understand God and Jesus Christ than it is to impress them. What a wonderful reward to know you opened someone's eyes to eternal life than the temporal reward of pride.

The good Shepherd

John 10:10 - 11
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Jesus the King

She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
Luke 2:7

Jesus's entrance to this world was quite humble. And yet it's a paradox for the King of the earth to arrive in modest conditions. He came, in his righteousness, to serve us, those who are unrighteous. As an adult Jesus taught us to love our enemies which sounds backwards. These paradoxes are different from how you would expect a real king to arrive.

Come To Trust in God

Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.
1 Peter 1:21

On the surface, it may seem hard to connect with God. We think of Him sitting high on a throne, too busy for us to approach Him. That idea is not true. It is through Christ we have a personal relationship with Him. Christ knows our unique strengths and weaknesses and He provides blessings tailored just for our individual situations. Christ died on the cross to become a bridge to God. How personal is your relationship with Christ?

Matthew 7:14

Eternal life is considered to be narrow because there is only one way, through believing in Christ Jesus. Unfortunately, as the Bible says, only a few will find it. The road is difficult because it may mean we lay down our pride, take the high road, and serve others with love. But, oh how blessed we are that there is a road!

Purposeful Suffering

So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.
1 Peter 4:19

No one likes to suffer but yet we all do at some point in our lives. The question is whether we're suffering with a Godly purpose or suffering from our bad decisions. If you've made a decision such as to purchase unnecessary stuff and find yourself suffering financially, it's probably time to take action and reverse the suffering. However, if you're in an uncomfortable situation because of an inconvenience to your schedule due to helping others, it may just be a suffering with a Godly purpose. What are you suffering for?

We must have courage to do good and bring light into others. If we aren't careful we can easily tire, so be mindful. Nevertheless, challenge yourself to do one good thing for someone else today.

The Kind of Sorrow

For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There's no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
2 Corinthians 7:10

It's hard to believe, but sometimes God WANTS us to become sad and upset. He desires that we use those emotions constructively for spiritual growth to bring us closer to Him. The big question is at the end of the day do you feel sadness over your past behavior because of disobedience to God or for the consequences of your actions? Feeling worldly sorrow? Don't worry, seek God in all of your ways.

Sweet as Perfume

The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.
Proverbs 27:9

If you feel you are lacking this connection with a friend, become intentional and reconnect or seek out a friend. Cultivate a relationship of trust by connecting on a regular basis.

No Condemnation

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1

No human is able to live a blameless and sinless life. But only because of Christ's death on the cross we are no longer bound. Christ took on our sins for us. Believing that Jesus paid this price for us allows us to be free from guilt condemnation. How awesome that we are set free from bondage!! Do you feel like you've been set free?

For no one is abandoned by the Lord forever. Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love.
Lamentations 3:31-32

As parents, do we take joy in punishing our children? No! But we do it because we love our children. In the same way, it is also painful when we receive punishment from the Lord. Take joy that you have a heavenly Father who is unfailing in His love for you. Because He takes the time to punish you, He will also take the time to bless you with love.

First Among You

Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Mark 10:43-45

We are all leaders whether we know it or not. But the real questions is if you recognize your leadership among others and lead according to Jesus's standard. Not even Jesus abused His power to advance His efforts. So why do we? What areas of your life do you place yourself above others?

And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the truth.
Acts 17:11

It's very important we stay tuned into God's word. Otherwise, how will we know if we are receiving the truth according to Christ's teaching? Couldn't we easily be misguided if we are not well versed with the truth? God has blessed us with an important tool, the Bible. Let's use it correctly to steer ourselves in the right direction as well as to determine if others are teaching us correctly. Are you familiar with the Bible to determine if others are teaching according to what it says?

This will help jump start your prayer life. Or write down your prayers in a journal to detail out your thoughts.

2 Samuel 12:23

King David spoke these words after his infant son died. Death is hard and we all feel the holes left behind. Anger and hurt can sometimes be byproducts of a loved one's passing. But we as Christians must believe that God can use any death for His glory, no matter how incomprehensible. Look for the good that was left behind and choose that to be your focus.

Deuteronomy 29:29

It is impossible to wrap our minds around God and His ways. But mystery is what keeps us returning to learn more about Him.  Although there are secrets surrounding Him, we are to honor the Lord in the lessons we have learned.  In addition, we are given the responsibility of passing on these lessons to our children and instilling in them a desire to uncover more of God's mysteries.

Trust God with your treasures and give away your earthly ones.

Loving Reminder

The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
Isaiah 58:11

It's difficult when someone true to your heart is struggling with an issue. If it's someone close such as your spouse, children or dear friend, you almost wish the burden could be on you instead; but it can't. And it really doesn't help them much when you say everything will work out fine. There is one everlasting solution. Remind them that the Lord will give them strength and never leave them. Simply embrace your faith.

Chance to Grow

For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.

Save The Reward

"Watch out! Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.
Matthew 6:1

While it is nice to be appreciated by others, it is no reason to flaunt our good deeds. To solicit praise publicly is not wise in the long run. You see, our Heavenly Father wants to recognize us for our good deeds. But if we have already received attention on earth for it, then we have already spent the reward. Next time you feel the need to praise yourself, pause and think how much more treasured is a reward from God versus others.

He feels your pain and knows what you are going through and He can carry you through it. Lean on Him.

Good comes to those

Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly.
Psalm 112:5

Isn't it true we tell ourselves we will be generous to others once we get, say, a car paid off? We set a standard and once it is met only then will we begin to be generous. But doesn't it boil down to a lack of trust in God? Ultimately, we question if God will provide enough for both. And yet, we know it isn't true because He sent His son to die for our sins. Believe that God will meet your needs and He will allow you to be generous.

If you look back on all the prior times God has provided and blessed you, then when you pray your attitude will be as if He has already provided for your need. You see, faith is not merely asking for something and hoping it will happen, it is believing that God will provide a way.

We humans, made in the image of God, are built for relationships. When there is discord among friends, family, and neighbors it affects our relationship with God. How can we worship God and refuse to revive healthy loving relationships with others? Is there someone in your life that has something against you? Go and be reconciled.

A Godly Life

Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
2 Timothy 3:12

As hard as it may be, this truth is something we will encounter in our lives. We will suffer persecution because we believe in justice and standing up for our belief in Jesus. This means we will be criticized for our faith. What can we do to strengthen our faith now so that later when we encounter persecution we are ready? Staying connected in the Bible daily and constantly talking to God.

Lord Still Loves

Then the Lord said to me, "Go and love your wife again, even though she commits adultery with another lover. This will illustrate that the Lord still loves Israel, even though the people have turned to other gods and love to worship them."
Hosea 3:1

Sometimes we forget how much God really loves us and He is constantly reminding us of this. Similarly, God constantly had to remind Israel of His love, but soon thereafter they would end up worshiping false gods of other nations. When you allow outside influences and distractions to come in, you easily take your focus off of God. God will do anything to bring your attention back to Him, because of His love for you.

Confess Your Sins

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
James 5:16

Thinking about confession can bring up emotions prompting you to run away. Try to overcome them. Confession is an uncomfortable action, but is important to the path of healing. When we hide our sins, it only makes things worse. Instead, bring them into the light by sharing your sins. Start today.

Willing and Able

Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?
1 Corinthians 3:16

It's important to take care of your body. When the body of Christ needs your help we should be ready, willing, and ABLE. If we are too tired, unhealthy, or weak we will miss being a part of the movement of our community and local church. There are times when it's important for us to step up and help friends move homes or cook meals after surgeries. While nurturing your health may not directly minister to others, it does allow you to be ready to lend a hand to someone in need which reveals the character of Christ.

Not a Reward

Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:9-10

The majority of things in life we work hard to earn: a living, an education, trust, respect, etc. But, opposite to the ways of this world, God doesn't ask us to work for His love. There is nothing we can even do to earn God's love. It is by grace alone that He loves us.

Only Little Love

"I tell you, her sins - and they are many - have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love.  But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love."
Luke 7:47

The woman Jesus was speaking about was not respected in her community because she was immoral. Jesus offered her a hope: to be released from her sins. As a result, she showered him with rare perfume. As believers in Christ, we are forgiven and should be generous with love towards Jesus and others.

Invisible Wounds

He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.
Psalm 147:3

Wounds are no longer visible to others when they heal. However, the memories and emotions remain. Without knowing, our words can sting vulnerable spots where wounds have previously healed. We should always try hard to be mindful and encouraging. In other words, master the art of exhortation. Encourage others today, and remember that God heals your wounds if you so accept.

I Give My Life to You

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."
John 8:12

Jesus came to this earth to give His life to us.  Through Him we have eternal life and without Him we walk in darkness.  When you have a personal relationship with God He will shine light in your life to make it blossom.  In what ways have you experienced the light of Jesus in your life?

ENDURING LOVE

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.
Psalm 118:1

We all have gone through lost or broken relationships. Those experiences may sometimes make us feel that there's no hope for a long-lasting enduring love in this world. As hard as it may seem to imagine especially when we're so focused on our earthly relationships, just remember that God does love you unconditionally. Don't give up on hope in love and have faith in God.

Like a Child

"I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it."
Mark 10:15

Children have a unique ability to accept things at face value. They place a great amount of faith in what they are told. As adults, it gets more difficult to blindly place our faith in the Kingdom of God. The Lord is trustworthy, He will not fail you. Dig deep inside to your inner child and step out in faith. Looking through the lens of your younger self, what can you trust God with today?

Only a Few Miracles

And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief.
Matthew 13:58

Don't wait for miracles to happen to jump start your faith. It starts with just the slightest itch for a greater purpose in life. Don't let the Creator of your life pass by because of your unbelief. Have a hard time believing, but want to believe? It's okay. Make a step in the right direction - listen to a Christian radio station, check out a sermon online, read an inspiring faith based book.

Poisonous Root

Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
Hebrews 12:15

It's always so difficult to see bitterness when you are feeling it, yet so easy to see in other people. Bitterness truly is a root that grows deep if you allow and the poison seeps everywhere. It even spills out to others around you, if you aren't careful. Search your heart earnestly. When you identify a thorny root, pray for the person who is the source of bitterness and allow God to do His work. It's not fun being consumed by poison.

Dust and Ashes

I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.
Job 42:6

Have you felt a need lately for God's forgiveness? We go through life striving and pretending to be exceptional at parenting, loving, or anything else. But when we don't measure up, we make excuses and quickly brush it under the rug for no one to see. Through those actions we refuse to recognize any need for God to strengthen us. Instead, let's ask God to forgive us of our pride and arrogance from ignoring our dependence on God.

The Quiet One

But Moses pleaded with the Lord, "O Lord, I'm not very good with words. I never have been, and I'm not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled."
Exodus 4:10

In a culture that promotes extroversion, people who are introverted can get drowned out. If you are an introvert, remember that you have special abilities such as listening, creativity, compassion and a peacefulness that spreads to others. Like Moses, you can be a great leader too. Seek God in your quiet time and allow Him to use your unique talents to do His will.

Those Who are Humble

God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
Matthew 5:5

How differently would our world look if it were run by humble people? Would war even exist? What would the workplace look like? Being meek in this world is very difficult to do, especially when it is not valued. But God values this characteristic and it is vital in His kingdom. He values it so much He would entrust the earth to those who are humble.

To His Purpose

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Romans 8:28

God is masterful in weaving events together for His glory, even if it is painful, challenging, or traumatic. When your world comes crashing down, keep your faith focused on God. He will not fail you. When your attention is focused on a solid rock, your perspective changes and the rest moves into your peripheral view. How can you stay focused on God when all else fails? Plant yourself in God's word. Be persistent in prayer. Confide in an accountability partner who is mature in their faith.

His Glory

They were calling out to each other, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven's Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!"
Isaiah 6:3

Today is a day of remembering our blessings and giving thanks for all we have. If you have a hard time thinking of blessings in this world, there are many around you. God's unending love for you and another day on this earth are but a few of our blessings. Don't forget that we need to give praise and glory to God for all we are blessed with. He is the ultimate source.

Unwilling to Work

Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: "Those unwilling to work will not get to eat."
2 Thessalonians 3:10

With so much going on in our lives today, the "unwillingness to work" doesn't appear applicable. If anything, we work way too much. However, being busy versus working on God's plan for you are two very different things. Are you willing to work on God's plan for you? There's more to His plan than just paying the bills. If you strive to work hard using the special talents He gave you, your work will be more effortless and purposeful.

Torn into Two

Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in Two, from top to bottom.
Mark 15:37-38

A great way to think of Jesus is that He is a bridge. God on one side of the river and humans are on the other. Because God is so perfect, He can't stand the sight of sin. Therefore, He was unapproachable without bringing a sacrifice to cover the sins. When Jesus came, He took the place of the sacrifice. Because the curtain was separated in two after Jesus's death, we are now able to freely approach God using the bridge. Use this gift often and speak to God.

Today's Bible Trivia

Which book begins with: After the death of Saul, David returned...
A. 1 Chronicles

Trust The Lord

They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them.
Psalm 112:7

Sometimes, your head is able to trust God but your heart gets in the way. You know God loves you and has an awesome plan for you, but still your heart isn't peaceful about it. We even try to control situations in life and we don't leave room for God to step in or we don't allow our hearts to step out in faith. If we are busy planning a failsafe, how will we ever notice God at work? Are you able to see the hand of God in your life because you have left room for Him to work?

Make Disciples of All

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:19

Have you ever been a part of teaching someone about Jesus Christ? When you open someone's eyes to the message of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins, it is a momentous occasion. Just think how this person's life will be changed. Picture it now, the potential for all they can accomplish and the growth they will encounter through God. Impacting a life makes a mark on eternity. Are you making a difference?

I Could Boast

If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn't love others, I would have gained nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:3

Sometimes on paper we can do all of the right things and appear to be righteous. However, this verse talks about taking the correct actions and still be incorrect because your heart is in the wrong place. The golden rule of loving others is key. Take a minute to thoroughly examine your motives. Are you motivated out of love or self-gain?

Tough Decisions

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
James 4:17

There are many tough decisions that we make everyday. A lot of times we simply weigh the pros and cons. However, the problem with that approach is the beneficiary is you. Shifting your thinking away from "how can I benefit?" will allow you to invite God into the choices you make. Remember, a good decision today that benefits others but cost you something will bring peace to you now with long-term benefits.

Crown of Glory

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by living a godly life.
Proverbs 16:31

You have much to offer those around you, bestowing others with your wisdom. Stop plucking and dying your gray hairs! They are a gift from God, a crown of glory.

Pay Back

See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people.
1 Thessalonians 5:15

When we get offended our first reaction is to return the offense and exact punishment. As a believer in Christ, we know better than to lash out in anger and return the hurt, although we do it in other ways. Don't allow yourself to get sidetracked by focusing on payment for the offense; God will handle that. After all, there's more important work to be done, such as showing them God's love.

Remain in Me

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
John 15:4

In this passage Jesus is represented by the vine. He says, if you stay close to Him you will receive His nourishment to allow you to produce fruit. How can you remain in Him? Gather some friends on a regular basis and talk about your spiritual walk. Mentor some youth so when they come to you with questions, you rely on the Bible. Seek out and serve in your local food pantry. Above all, be spiritually fruitful!

Lost Its Flavor

"You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless."
Matthew 5:13

Salt is used as a preservative to keep food fresh longer. Once it loses its usefulness the salt will get tossed out with yesterday's trash. It's difficult to imagine how salt loses its saltiness but in the context of a Christian, it's easy to see how a Christian loses their flavor. When Christians try to blend in with the world we give away the essence of a Christian. Let's do our best to keep our flavor!

A Good Thing

Ecclesiastes 5:19

Isn't it true how fortunate we would be if we were happy with the blessings God has given us? Rather, we spend much of our time thinking about the newest car we want or count down the days until our contract ends to get a new cell phone. Ecclesiastes 3:1

Sometime's bad things happen to good people. But how do you make peace with this thought, especially when you are fighting back anger, hurt, betrayal, or loneliness? It's important to realize God has perfect timing, even when we can't understand it. Without placing your faith in His timing, you leave room for resentment, despair, and rebellion. When you can't see the work God is doing through tragedy, remain faithful in knowing God's timing is perfect.

What are you dying for?

And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.
Revelation 12:11

What a powerful statement, to not be afraid of dying because you do not place a greater emphasis on your life over your faith. Everyone is dying for something, money, busyness, success, control, etc. However, the key question we need to ask ourselves is what are we dying for?

The Brokenhearted

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
Psalm 34:18

Are you missing someone who is very dear to your heart? The pain may be very deep and even unbearable. And while you may think that no one can truly understand your pain, there is one. Relinquish your sadness to God, even if it's just for a moment and you will feel comforted. Remember, God loves you and will never give up on you.

Lukewarm...

"I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!"
Revelation 3:15-16

What does it look like to be on fire for Christ? Does God see your faith as hot or cold, or worse, lukewarm? Are you thinking of ways you can impact God's kingdom? Is your day filled with busyness or is it filled with purposefulness? Maybe it's time to infuse some passion today.

Beyond Your Imagination

"Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you."
Deuteronomy 31:8

The ups and downs in life bring beauty in unforeseen ways. There are life events that batter us down. However, your faith can determine the outcome. It's easy to stay beaten in a lonely place by focusing on yourself as a victim. Or, you can overcome this and recover by placing your faith in God. Even more, you can come out a better person and excel beyond your imagination. Remember, God has the power to make things we can't see appear. It just takes a little faith.

A Good Reputation

Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation.
Hebrews 11:2

It is important to note a direct result of being faithful to God is the gift of a good reputation. When you are faithful to God it correlates that you are faithful to other people as well. Be careful though, it's easy to take pride in your reputation.

Iron Sharpens Iron

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
Proverbs 27:17

God created us to be relational, not isolated. For some of us, our stubbornness or hubris can hurt us by making decisions in our own little world. But receiving Godly advice from a mentor could change the course of your life. Who is your mentor? If you don't know, actively take steps to seek someone out.

Settle Your Differences

"When you are on the way to court with your adversary, settle your differences quickly. Otherwise, your accuser may hand you over to the judge, who will hand you over to an officer, and you will be thrown into prison."
Matthew 5:25

Pride can seep into a relationship when disagreements occur. The longer you sit and stew over your disagreement, the harder it is to reconcile. Pretty soon, days, weeks, and years pass by and you become accustomed to the way things have become in the relationship. Every passing moment without reconciliation makes it that much harder to turn around and say you are sorry. Don't let your pride get the better side of you. Make it a practice to hurry and settle your differences quickly.

Seek to Understand

Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions.
Proverbs 18:2

Opinions are as numerous as raindrops in a hurricane. They shower down on you from out of the sky and are offered up for anyone to hear. Often times though, opinions are too quickly spoken and rarely does the person offering their viewpoint seek to the heart of the matter. It would be wise to follow this piece of advice, seek to understand.

Meeting Together

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Hebrews 10:25

It's easy to get carried away with busy schedules and slip away from going to church. After all, there are only two days in the weekend. But don't let yourself forget the importance of church. Where will you go and who will you turn to in hard times? If you are already established in the church, you will find lots of support.

Not Now...

So Peninnah would taunt Hannah and make fun of her because the Lord had kept her from having children.
1 Samuel 1:6

God's answer of "not now" to Hannah's prayers was difficult to bear while enduring the cutting, taunting words. God's timing may appear to be disconnected from your circumstances, but in hindsight His timing is timely. Weather through the storm, God will give you the strength. If you know of a fellow Christian going through such times, come alongside them and help lift them up.

Give Justice

"Give justice to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute."
Psalm 82:3

It is not enough to pray for God to send someone to rescue the oppressed when you are very capable. What if God has already chosen you and He's waiting on you to decide if you want to help? What if your impact could prevent even more people from being taken advantage of? Wouldn't that be a remarkable legacy if you could make a difference, even if it was only one person's life?

To Please Him

So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him.
2 Corinthians 5:9

Whether we know it or not, our lives are moving in a direction. If we are not intentional about goals, achievements, or accomplishments, it is easy to get swept away in the business of life. It's important to remember the ultimate goal is to please God, which can be done through different avenues. What are you working towards in your life and is it pleasing to God?

Those Who Endure

We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.
James 5:11

Sometimes a course in your life extends further than planned and leaves you with an empty tank. It can be exhausting even to the point of near tearful surrender. But remember what James says that you will be honored for your endurance. Keep on patiently enduring and remember to emphasize the treasures in life as those blessings will fill your empty tank.

Stronger than you think

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
1 Corinthians 10:13

Temptations can range from seemingly harmless distractions to life threatening addictions and everything in between. Where does yours fit in? The irony is that this one thing that is so personal to you is a struggle for many others too. Remember that you are not alone in many ways. Trust in God and lean on Him for the strength to overcome them each day. Only He can make you stronger than you think.

Great Treasure

We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.
2 Corinthians 4:7

The light shining in our hearts is the news that Jesus Christ is our Lord. We are charged with the task of showing the world how Christ has changed us. However, when we show these great abilities over time, it is easy to get puffed up and think we are the ones who are responsible for the greatness. Rather, it is important to stay connected to God and always remember He is the ultimate source of power.

Genesis 4:7

In this verse God is warning Cain, the son of Adam and Eve, about the danger of sin. God characterized sin as something that can be tamed but with deliberate focus. Self-control is a muscle that needs to be exercised and with practice it gets easier and easier to do. What can you do to strengthen your self-control muscle?

The Lord made them both

The rich and poor have this in common: The Lord made them both.
Proverbs 22:2

This verse is very simple to understand. Essentially, everyone is created by God. But it is the application of this verse that is pivotal. The great divide between the have's and have not's is certainly not because God favors one person over the other. We should not discriminate or look down on one another because of a persons financial status. We are all made by God, in His image.

"Buy This Power"

When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power.
Acts 8:18

Poor Simon was too far from understanding the concept of faith. The Spirit lives within you through repentance of your sins and asking for forgiveness. Instead, Simon wanted to cut to the chase and receive the benefits of the power of the Holy Spirit. Today we do the same thing, attend church thinking it will make up for the time we didn't read our Bible or spend time with God. Stretch yourself beyond this type of thinking and reach for a relationship. Invest your time in God.

Everything you need

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.
Luke 12:31

Do you have everything you need? Does what you need match up according to the Kingdom of God? Let God's Kingdom come in to your work, play, business, friendships, all areas of your life. Don't hold back. Align your life to be constantly seeking God and His Kingdom.

The Supreme Judge

You have seen the wrong they have done to me, Lord. Be my judge, and prove me right.
Lamentations 3:59

When someone treats us badly or takes what is rightfully ours, we want revenge. Often times we secretly hope bad things come their way. But is that really how we should react? Don't they still deserve our love? When we take charge and take revenge it's because we believe we can do a better job than God. Take heart in knowing God, the supreme judge, who reigns in Heaven also reigns on Earth.

House on Sand

But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn't obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.
Matthew 7:26

The Bible has a lot to say on how we should live our lives. If we know how we are supposed to live and disregard that knowledge it is foolish. As we build our lives, we should strive to build it on a solid foundation that will last forever, the Kingdom of God. What are you building your house on?

Sing for Joy

I helped those without hope, and they blessed me. And I caused the widows' hearts to sing for joy.
Job 29:13

Believe it or not, you are very powerful as well. You have the ability to make other peoples' hearts sing and flutter, especially to those without hope.

Hard Work

Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.
Proverbs 21:5

What does your work ethic look like? Does your work ethic communicate the strength of your character? Do you ever hear anyone admit to having a bad work ethic? Those are some hard questions. But it is worthwhile in the end to grow and strengthen your character.

Punished for Sins

Then why should we, mere humans, complain when we are punished for our sins?
Lamentations 3:39

When we feel God is disciplining us we get angry and shake our fists at him. If you feel He has turned his back on you it is exactly the opposite. Because He loves you he wants to teach you. As parents we want our kids to learn the difference between right and wrong. How could our children say we don't love them because they receive discipline from us? Isn't that further from the truth?

Today's Bible Trivia

Will Not Fail You

No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you.
Joshua 1:5

Think back to a time when an exciting, unbelievable event happened in your life. Then, put that event into context. What important events, conversations, or interactions happened to make the miracle possible? At first glance those precursors seem random, but in hindsight everything seemed to come together. That's the hand of God in your life. When you think He has abandoned you He is actually busy at work.

Trouble is Enough

So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.
Matthew 6:34

At the very root of worry is fear. Fear of the unknowns or what if's can erode away the security we find in God. Don't let this fear overtake you and allow the worry to creep in your thoughts. Place your confidence in Jesus that He will provide and comfort you. Then pray.

The Beauty of Rest

For all who have entered into God's rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.
Hebrews 4:10-11

Are you well rested? We can enter marathons of work, projects and even emotional hardships. You may feel invincible at times and take on more than your body can handle. But remember that God made us in His image and we should rest just like He did. Firmly set aside a day or two after any intense period of work to replenish yourself.

Will Not Leave

Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.
Proverbs 22:6

When you have children there is always an excess of people who want to advise you on how to raise them. The above verse is also a piece of advice as well. However, this is advice coming from God who created us and knows how we fit together. Why not accept advice from THE person who knows us the best and help them get familiar with God.

Wiser Than Elders

I am even wiser than my elders, for I have kept your commandments.
Psalm 119:100

Think of someone who you believe to be wise. More often than not that person is older than you. With age comes wisdom, but that is not to say that wisdom only comes with age. When you are obedient to God and his teachings the Lord will bless you with insight. Have you noticed a growth of wisdom from walking with the Lord?

Think Differently

And don't grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.
1 Corinthians 10:10

Complaining is contagious and can destroy the start of a beautiful day. As we return to work after a vacation, there's a tendency to complain when our mind has yet to accept our return back to work. It's an effortless state to be in; however, we have a choice to think differently. Honor God. Think positive. Maybe this feeling is a message for us to make some adjustments to bring passion and purpose back into your lives.

Too Hard

You say, 'It's too hard to serve the Lord,' and you turn up your noses at my commands," says the Lord of Heaven's Armies.
Malachi 1:13

Walking by faith in the Lord is not an easy path. It comes fraught with a journey of constantly recognizing we aren't perfect, seeking and maintaining peace around us, or even living with honor and integrity. But learning to grow and walk according to God's commands is part of a relationship with God. Don't turn up your nose, it's not too hard! Along the path you will be rewarded and blessed greatly. Are you regularly seeking to learn more of God's ways?

Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her.
1 Timothy 5:3

Believe it or not, God has left instructions for us to take care of one another. One group of people we need to look out for are widows. We as the body of Christ need to extend ourselves to those who find themselves as widows. Anyone who protects and cares for widows will truly be blessed by God. Do you know of anyone God has placed in your life who is a widower for you to look after?

We can confidently believe in a time when hurt, pain, and sorrow will end. It's comforting to know amidst all of your despair and discouragement there is one thing you can be sure of which is that it will come to an end.

It is such a joyful event when a friend or loved one accepts Jesus Christ into their lives. This is something we should celebrate and be thankful for. Because we love that person so much we want the best for them and walking in the light and love of God is a gift. While everyone may not accept this gift, it is our calling to share it.

Wisdom of Wise

Because of this, I will once again astound these hypocrites with amazing wonders. The wisdom of the wise will pass away, and the intelligence of the intelligent will disappear.
Isaiah 29:14

How heavily do you lean upon wisdom? Leaning on wisdom can be helpful but sometimes it can be harmful to our faith. Sure, it's logical to take out an insurance policy, but are you depending on that policy for security when trouble comes or are you looking to Christ to rescue you? Is the wise decision you're making today leading you to or away from God?

Today's Bible Trivia

Feeling, Tired

I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me.
Psalm 69:3

Do you ever feel tired? I mean tired of just trying so hard and yet just moving inches. Maybe you're trying to mend a relationship, advance your career, or just trying to gather yourself emotionally. Despite these valleys in your life, don't give up on hope. This hope is the purposefulness of your tribulations that God has planned to produce the most beautiful story about you. Be patient, strong and trust in Him. Do not give up.

Anything is Possible

"What do you mean, If I can?" Jesus asked. "Anything is possible if a person believes."
Mark 9:23

Some days can be a bit lackluster or uninspiring. If you're having too many of those days, maybe it's time to be inspired to do great things. It's possible if you believe. However, this belief is not in your capabilities but rather in God who can provide for you something far greater than what you're thinking now. Use your imagination then trust God!

B. Barnabas
C. Timothy
D. Peter

Be Rooted

Don't team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:14

It can be a challenge at times to work with unbelievers. Putting God first is a major paradigm shift that changes how many decisions are made. Because of this, it is very important to be strong and rooted so that you influence Godly ways onto others and not soak in the ways of an earthly mind. Remember to be a light to others by showing others how God always shines love and grace.

Naturing Relationships

A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.
Proverbs 17:17

It's almost expected for our friends to be loyal and our family to help but there is a precursor to this that we don't always think about. These relationships need to be nurtured. Have you reached out to a friend lately to offer some help or simply meet for lunch? Make an effort to engage in an activity together with a friend or family member. Building your relationships will not go unnoticed over time.

Considerate in all

Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do.
Philippians 4:5

This verse isn't asking us to put on a show and make it obvious for everyone to see that we are considerate. Instead it is saying our consideration should be so well thought out it becomes obvious to the amount of thought involved. What does consideration look like? Anticipate others' needs, have empathy, tolerate personality differences, use basic manners or even being punctual. Focus on one area of consideration you can work on improving today.

Own Conscience

They demonstrate God's law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.
Romans 2:15

Do you ever get a feeling inside convicting you to take an action? Sometimes we fight and wrestle and don't want to give money to the needy or raise our hand in worship or whatever you are feeling compelled to do. When we resist too long the moment will pass us by and we are left wondering, or worse, seeing the consequences. But giving in to our conscience and taking action feels good when we know we are doing right. Is there something you are feeling convicted about? Take action now!

If you claim...

If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.
James 1:26

Our tongues can get the better of us if we let them. But it doesn't have to be that way if we work on improving control over our tongue. When our tongue goes uncontrolled it allows others to connect the things we say to what we profess to believe. Let's not let our uncontrolled tongues negate all that we stand for and who we believe in. Put your effort in holding back your tongue as an effort to improve your self-control.

Thankful heart

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.
Colossians 4:2

When you focus on the things you don't have you begin to undervalue the blessings God has given you. Then feelings of resentment and shortchanged start to build up. It can happen in our prayers when we only make requests. Take a moment and think through the ways you are blessed and thank God for them. When you truly realize the amount of blessings in your life you truly feel loved by God.

Miracles Do Happen

Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.
John 14:11

Much of the work Jesus did on earth was miracles he performed. However, in present day we discount the credibility of miracles because we rely heavily on reason and logic but a large portion of believing in miracles is having faith in God. Is there an area in your life where a miracle is needed? Maybe it's in your relationships, finances or in your heart. Don't give up on believing. Miracles can and do happen but only through your faith in God.

Romans 8:37 - 39

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Today's Bible Humor

What is life without Christ like?

Judging others

God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?
James 4:12

God is the perfect judge because He created the law. When we judge other people it is a sign we don't trust God will judge accordingly. Or it is a sign that our own authority is greater than God's. Both of these ideas are far from the truth. If you find yourself looking down on another person, try focusing on your love and appreciation for them. Your love leaves a greater impact than your judgement.

In Jesus name...

Listen to correction

If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.
Proverbs 15:32

Discipline can be a hard thing to take, especially as an adult when we are so used to getting everything our way. But isn't it true that when you fight discipline it only makes things worse? Those who fight it end up feeling the pain much harsher. Public figures who deny scandals and later turn out to be true are disciplined much harsher. Don't fight it and grow.

A gift of peace mind

"I am leaving you with a gift - peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid."
John 14:27

The gift of peace is very valuable to this world. Isn't this why people go on vacations, smoke cigarettes, and get massages — to relieve stress? However, these quickly fade away and so too does the temporary peace. Lasting peace is possible and it is a promise we can depend on. Are you accepting of this gift? Are you depending on this gift daily when you encounter trouble?

Keeping Promises

It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it.
Ecclesiastes 5:5

Obligation, guilt, reciprocate, these are only a few reasons that cause us to make promises whether or not we intend on keeping them. When we don't follow through on our promises this leaves other people let down and frustrated. Or something even worse happens, they begin to not trust in our future promises. It's challenging, but let's practice committing only to promises we know we can keep and intentionally following through on those we have already made.

The Childlike

At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike."
Matthew 11:25

Wisdom can be a blessing, but it can also be a stumbling block. With too much wisdom we begin to rationalize and explain away. This may sound counterintuitive at first, however, without using our heart it's easy to become cold, impersonal, and use logic to remain justified. Keep a childlike perspective to be willing to learn and be wrong.

What drives you & your purpose

Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless - like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:4

What drives you and your purpose in being successful? Do you resent your neighbor because of what they have? The wrong motives for success can keep you from actually enjoying success. Otherwise, you will never become successful in your own eyes. There will always be someone more successful to come along. As Solomon says, keeping up with the Jones' is fruitless.

Unconditional Love

Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Your unfailing love will last forever!
Psalm 89:1

Upon what conditions do you give your love? Or is love a condition of good behavior? When someone we love does things or makes decisions that we disagree with, that's not the time to use our love as a tool for manipulation. Unconditional love is pure and everlasting regardless of behavior. Is there anyone who doesn't deserve your unconditional love? That's exactly the person you should focus on loving.

Matthew 5:6

Well Built

I will show you what it's like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.
Luke 6:47-48

Staying grounded in God's word is essential to a strong faith that withstands floodwaters. But it's also essential to apply what you have learned to your life. With a firm faith you can weather any storm when it comes your way in life. Are you laying the foundation for a solid faith?

Psalm 145:8

Lights in the Sky

Then God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them mark off the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth." And that is what happened.
Genesis 1:14-15

It seems like we wake up everyday and go about our lives without pausing but rather rushing. Hit the pause button for a moment today and admire the surroundings that God has provided so graciously to us. Remember, God loves you so much that He lights candles for you in the sky every night!

Eye of a needle

In fact, it is easer for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!
Mark 10:25

No one ever really thinks of themselves as being rich and we often characterize our wants as needs. When you look around and see those who have less it's easy to let your heart harden over time and ignore them. We even go so far as to tell ourselves "I can't give to this hungry man, because I have to pay for my 'need.'" Don't allow your wants to be stumbling blocks to the Kingdom of God.

Judging others

Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. (NLT)
Matthew 7:1

Whew, that's quite a challenge! When someone else makes judgments about ourselves, we fight it. Yet, we judge each other daily in all matters of life and make comparisons to see how we measure up. We, however, are not the perfect judge and in making our own judgments we overstep God's authority. What are some things you can do to stop yourself from judging others?

To Serve

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. (NLT)
Matthew 20:28

Do you ever go through days that seem like something is missing? We work so hard to accomplish goals in our life so that we can provide a better life for ourselves and our families. But this can also focus our attention on the "things" we have and more importantly don't have. Where we direct our focus can lead us to that feeling of void. Instead of focusing on ourselves, direct your focus on someone in need. You may not see the immediate impact on your goals but in some way and at some time, God will honor your actions.

Faith, Hope and Love

Three things will last forever - faith, hope, and love - and the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13

The greatest of these may be love, but don't underestimate the power of hope. When we are in our deepest depths of despair, it is hope that keeps us going when it's hard to get out of bed. Have you lost sight of our hope? Our hope is everlasting. Our hope is full of grace. Our hope is in Christ Jesus.

Daniel 2:19-23 NIV

During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said: "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him. I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king."

Psalm 118:8
